Once bitten...

Last night it was forecast to rain so I didn't put the trap out and by 1am when it was evidently a mild night with a clear sky I was kicking myself....I didn't make the same mistake twice!

Tonight was very mild and there were a lot of moths around so well worth putting the trap out even if there wasn't anything new for my garden, there were a lot of micros so I got a photo of one of them(?) as well as a photo of a particularly nice example of a Yellow Shell(I think?...see photo above).

Nearly but not quite

Things have certainly slowed down but you never know when an elusive new species might decide to visit your garden so I put the trap out tonight in the hope that tonight might be that night but despite getting all excited when I thought I had a September Thorn which on closer inspection turned out to be a small Dusky Thorn it wasn't that night tonight....ho hum.

Blown away

Very windy tonight, supposedly we're getting the tail end of 'Hurricane Billy' but whatever it was it seems to have put the moths off flying for the night. A few braver specimens did land on or around the trap but most of them didn't stay for long once the wind started up, there wasn't much in the trap at the end of the night and certainly nothing new so I'll share a photo of Amblyptilia Acanthadactyla with you this time.

Red Underwing

A warm but very blustery night with occasional drizzle which got heavier just before 2am so I decided to bring the trap in earlier than usual to avoid any chance of the rain damaging the lamp, I had seen what I thought were 2 Old Lady moths fluttering around the trap but it turned out one was a stunning Red Underwing which was inside the trap and came as quite a surprise to me when I found it(there was an Old Lady in there too!).

The Sallow

Tonight was quiet and there didn't appear to be a lot of moths about but there were more than expected in the trap including one new species for my garden. I'd been reading the latest Essex Moths blog(http://bensale-essexmoths.blogspot.com/) in which Ben mentions that Sallow moths are amongst his favourites and that we should be expecting to see more of them in the coming weeks as Autumn draws closer then as if by magic I got my first example of 'The Sallow' and he's not wrong about their beauty!.

Strange but in a good way

It was fairly cold tonight and as expected there weren't a huge amount of moths around the trap but each time I went out to check I found something new or interesting such as an immaculate Vapourer Moth which was much nicer than the tatty looking example I got last time. I got a Large Wainscot and a Red-Green Carpet both new species for my garden and even some of the micros were new to me so all in all a good night even if there weren't a lot of moths.

Looks like rain again..

Very warm tonight...in fact so warm I expected it to rain so I wasn't too surprised by a light shower which caused panic at 1am but I was surprised at 2:15 when it started raining quite heavily and didn't stop!. I put one of the large 'centre of the garden table' type umbrellas over the trap just in case and it seems to help with several moths resting on it at the end of each trapping session...it's saved the lamp from the rain on 2 or 3 occasions already.

There were quite a few moths around again and at one point there were no less than 3 Old Lady moths on the sheet(none in the trap though) but what I ended up with in the trap was rather disappointing. I took 90% of last nights catch to a park about 3 miles from home but many of the same species in similar numbers turned up again tonight, is it possible that some moths do return to specific places to feed, breed or to do whatever else they need to do?.

No new species again so you can have another micro but this time I think I know what it is....Pyrausta Aurata?.

A much warmer night tonight and there were a lot more moths around, there seems to be a sudden influx of Willow Beauty, Setaceous Hebrew Character and Carpet moths as well as a large amount of micros(mainly assorted Tortix) but many of the usual finds showed up again too. There was nothing new to my garden so I got some photos of a couple of the micros so you can have some fun guessing what they are?(1 is possibly a V-Pug but I have no idea what the other one is).

Not much happening tonight!

I was out running my music club last evening and didn't get back till late so I didn't put the trap out but despite the cold I thought I'd give it a try tonight and it was amazing to see how few moths were around compared to just a few nights ago. I know things will start to quieten down as the evenings get cooler but to go from 127 macros on Tuesday to just 24 on Friday is quite a drop in numbers, let's hope the weather gets a bit warmer again or it will be down to speculative trapping once a week instead of expectant trapping nightly.

I didn't get anything new for my garden but I did get another of the small Silver-Y moths which I had mistaken for a Scarce Silver-Y the first and second time I got them, how unusual is this size variant?, is it a recognised 'sub-species' or is it a new phenomenon that nobody is quite sure about yet?.

Staunton Harold Reservoir

Thanks to my wonderful wife I got to spend 3 hours trapping at Staunton Harold reservoir this evening from 8:30pm to 11:30pm, I took the 'Skinner' trap with the 160w MBT all powered very nicely by the generator I got from eBay recently which ran surprisingly well.

Not a lot of moths actually went into the trap they mainly landed on or around the sheet but I did manage to pick off quite a few for identification, apart from the few I kept in order to get their photo I let everything else out of the trap before I left so I don't end up confusing things by finding them in my garden tomorrow night.

Staunton Harold is only approximately 6 miles from my home so I wasn't too surprised to find many of the species I usually get in my garden there but it's a beautiful place and it was a beautiful warm evening so it sure beat sitting in watching TV.

Fools Gold(Spots)

A clear sky again but a much warmer night tonight though still not a lot more moths around apart from Gold Spot moths of which I counted more than 20 just flying around the Buddleia, when I emptied the trap I found 35 in total(26 Lempke's Gold Spot and 9 Gold Spot) some of which I had to put in a separate container so I could work out which were which(see photo above). Just one new to my garden species tonight and I think it's a Flounced Rustic but with my reputation for getting things wrong this week it will probably turn out to be an elephant that had escaped from the local zoo and was hiding in the trap for fun! :0)

Treble Bar, Centre Barred Sallow & a Bee Moth

A much colder night tonight with a clear sky and a lot less moths than usual but an interesting bunch none the less with 3 new to my garden species. The Treble-Bar was in the trap early on, the Bee Moth I found on the side of the lamp holder when I was emptying the trap and the Centre-Barred Sallow was in the bottom layer of egg trays.

Flounced Rustic and a Copper conundrum

A much larger variation of species tonight and quite a lot of moths in total, the Flounced Rustic is a new one for me if that's what it is??.

I regularly get Copper Underwing moths but tonight I noticed what looks very like a smaller version with a much lighter colouring, is it just a washed out Copper Underwing or could it be something else?(see photo above). I was lucky enough to have a Copper Underwing sat on the undersheet and I took a photo of them together so you can more easily see the comparisons/differences.

Carpet World

Plenty of moths again tonight but apart from an assortment of Carpet moths there was nothing else new to my garden, these Carpet moths along with the two I had last night are turning up fairly regularly but I'm unsure about what they are. I've looked at various sites but the Carpet moths all look so similar I'm struggling to tell which is which so if anyone can help me with the 4 above it would be much appreciated(1st Garden, 2nd Grey Pine, the 3rd one I'm sure is a Green Carpet and the last one a Small Phoenix....thanks to Ben for ID help)

Orange Swift, Square Spot Rustic, some Carpets & ?

An Orange Swift was sitting in the trap within 20 minutes of me putting it out, it's always nice when something new turns up early on because the rest of the night can only get better. I also noticed a couple of moths that looked familiar but somehow different....there's a lot of that with moths but these 2 turned out to be Square Spot Rustic(thanks Ben) which I'm almost certain I've had some of in the trap before but they look so much like several other species I had never singled them out before. I get Carpet moths quite a lot which are so difficult to get decent photos of but I've been using the '30 minutes in the fridge' trick and it's making things much easier(sometimes!), tonights examples were a Common Marbled Carpet and a Common Carpet. I also got what I think is a 6 Striped Rustic so if can anyone can confirm this or correct my mistake please do(see top photo above).

One month anniversary

I celebrated my 1 month anniversary of getting back to moth trapping this evening with a somewhat unexpected group of uninvited but very welcome party guests, first and by all means least was a rather annoying bat which was flying back and forth across the garden for nearly an hour probably thinking it had found the bat equivalent to a drive-thru burger bar. Second I was joined by 2 rather cute but shy mice who scurried repeatedly up and down the garden path to check around the base of the bird table for any scraps. Third guest was a very startled fox which wasn't expecting to see me when it clambered over the garden fence, it didn't hang round for long, in fact it clambered back up the fence immediately mainly because one of my German Shepherds was heading right for it with an 'I'm not amused' look on his face. The last guest of the night was the biggest surprise and it came in the shape of a huge hedgehog, I've never seen a hedgehog in our garden before but it could explain why the number of slugs has been dropping in recent weeks.

Anyway.....I did some moth trapping too and got quite a large haul which included one new to my garden species getting me up to a total of 77 identified species of macro moths which isn't bad for 31 days worth!(only 26 nights trapping). The Old Lady and the Poplar Hawk didn't actually go into the trap, the Old Lady 'crashed' into the bushes next to it then fell onto the sheet and the Poplar Hawk landed on the side of it.

Spots before my eyes!

I got my first Gold Spot moth earlier this month and there have been plenty of them since, when I did a bit of research I discovered that there are 2 specific types of Gold Spot moth and it turned out the type I had caught was a Lempke's Gold Spot. I got 4 of the Lempke's G. S. tonight and my first non-Lempke's, they were good enough to let me take a photo of them together and the difference is fairly obvious(see top photo above, the Lempke's is on the right), the Lempke's is a lot more orange/bronze in colour compared to the non-Lempke's brownish colouring and there is quite a difference in their size too.

Nothing else new tonight unfortunately but a good haul nevertheless

The Old Lady & the lamp

For a few weeks there's been something big lurking in the dark!, I've seen it from my window and I've seen it several times while I was out in the garden watching the trap....it even landed 2ft away from me once but flew off as soon as I moved....tonight it was there again but this time I was ready with my net and I caught it....my first Old Lady.

Another cool clear night with a bright moon, not a lot of moths around but some interesting finds in the trap including my first Vapourer moth and my first Least Yellow Underwing(albeit rather scruffy looking examples of both). The Vapourer is usually a day flier so I wasn't expecting to find it in the trap.

It turned out to be a little cooler than expected tonight with a clear sky and a bright moon which apparently isn't good if you want to trap moths?, the lethargic calm of the Large Yellow Underwings was nice though and they didn't appear to have disturbed any of the more 'interesting' species so I was more than happy with tonights catch...specially the 3 Lempke's Gold Spot moths which are a new species to my garden and beautiful to behold.

The trap was out from 9:15pm till 3:30am
